I am third generation United States Army, so there was heavy childhood indoctrination in my family. You weren’t a man until you served in a combat unit. In a culture where older rights of passage have been abandoned or intentionally erased, all in service of the imperial machine, there is one coming of age ritual universally available to young men in America - the military. This episode demonstrates how that is bad for literally everyone on the planet.
We are joined by Jasper Craven, an award-winning investigative journalist covering the U.S. military, veterans' issues, and the American educational complex. He is the author of the critically acclaimed book God Forgives, Brothers Don’t, which will be discussed here today, and a frequent contributor to major national publications. His investigative reporting on the military has appeared in The New York Times, The New Republic, Harper's Magazine, Politico, The Baffler, and The Intercept. Links to his book, both print and audio:
